The United Methodist General Conference opened today. The General Conference is the main legislative and governing body of the world-wide United Methodist Church. It is made up of no more than 1000 delegates from Annual Conferences around the United States and across the world. The delegates are apportioned based on the size of the Annual Conference. The Virginia Annual Conference has the largest delegation at General Conference and Florida has the second largest delegation. This conference meets every four years for ten days in late April and early May. This time the conference is meeting in Ft. Worth, Texas. Four years from now, in the spring of 2012, the General Conference will be held here in Tampa. So, we will get to see "up close and personal" what a United Methodist General Conference looks like.
